Halmpstone Manor, lounge Halmpstone Manor provides a 400 year old tradition of hospitality. When in 1630 John Westcote wrote in his book, 'A View of Dartmoor', that the hospitality he had received at Halmpstone Manor had been 'delightful', he had no idea that centuries later Jane and Charles Stanbury would be continuing the tradition and the same description would apply.
The name 'Halmpstone' means 'holy boundary stone' indicating the Manor's links with the ecclesistical lands of Bishops Tawton. The first specific mention of Halmpstone, or 'Helgmeston as it was then spelt, was in 1166 when Roger de Champreaux held it on 'half fee from the Bishop'. The de Champreaux stayed in residence at the Manor for over a century after which it passed through many families as part of a bride's dowry. Halmpstone Manor, dining room
Halmpstone Manor, lounge It eventually passed, again along the female line, to the Bennet family and then to the Hawkeye family until in 1750 it passed into the hands of yet another very old North Devon family, the Coffins of Portledge.
The illustrious family of the Chichesters eventually purchased Halmpstone, first through an arranged partnership and then solely by Charles Chichester in 1807.

This rich tapestry of history can be felt throughout the Manor for you to experience for yourself.
