The Abbey lies across a beautiful sheltered valley by a small trout stream, only a mile walk to a spectacular Atlantic Cove. The last Abbey in the country to be dissolved in 1539, Henry VIII gave it to the Sergeant of this wine cellar, whose descendants live here today. From 1157, when Augustinian canons gardened in the hidden paradise, the gardens have been tended and have evolved over the generations. In the 18thC shrub gardens were created. Chambercombe Manor Ilfracombe A really wonderful 11th Century Manor within its own grounds which is fast gaining a reputation as one of BRITAINS MOST HAUNTED HOUSES. Set in a secluded valley, the Manor was first recorded in the Domesday Book and contains eight rooms of period furniture from Elizabethan to Victorian ears, Including a Priest Hole and a Haunted Room.
